Il flauto è probabilmente lo strumento musicale più antico. Produce il suono grazie all'oscillazione dell'aria contenuta nella cavità dello strumento. La vibrazione sonora, generata dalla pressione del soffio, viene modulata grazie all'apertura e alla chiusura dei fori, che avviene direttamente con le dita, oppure attraverso delle chiavi.
